Tracy stared at Caroline as she paced back and forth. “Caroline,” she said gently and patted a spot on the sofa next to herself. “Come sit down. You’re not doing anyone any good working yourself up like this.”

Caroline didn’t slow down. “I can’t. I have too much nervous energy.” She walked over to look out the window. “Where is he, Tracy? Where is Brian?”

Tracy walked over to take her by the shoulders and turn her around to face her. “Look, he said he’d be here in an hour. That was only forty-five minutes ago. If he isn’t here in twenty-five minutes, we’ll call his cell phone. In the meantime, why don’t you sit down and enjoy some of this tea I slaved over a hot kettle to make?”

Caroline’s mouth quirked half-heartedly. “It smells delicious.” She hugged Tracy. “Thanks for always being here when I need you, Trace.” She released her and moved over to sit down on the sofa.

“Hey, it’s not a problem. You don’t have to thank me.” Tracy looked out into the street, wondering herself what the hell was taking Brian so long. She was just as anxious as Caroline for him to get there. When Jack had phoned her earlier to let her know what was going on, she’d been shocked into silence. As she listened to him, she’d realized how much he’d come to mean to her. The thought of him being threatened by or even coming in contact with a cold, ruthless man like Brickman scared her.

The fact that Brickman had contacted Jack had brought the realization home to her. She was just as worried for him now as she was for Caroline, if not more. What did that mean? She was afraid of the possible answer.

She turned from the window at Caroline’s call. The look on her face told Tracy that she had said her name more than once. “I’m sorry,” Tracy said with a small smile. “I’m a bit out of it. What were you saying?”

“I was saying,” Caroline began as Tracy came over to sit next to her, “that I’m sorry for monopolizing the conversation. You must be worried too. For Jack, I mean.”

Tracy sighed. “Yes, I am. I’m as worried for him as I am for you. That confuses me because you’re the closest thing I have to family. You’re my sister in every way but the biological one. So why should I be as scared for him, someone I’ve known for such a short time, as I am for you? It makes no sense.”

“Of course it makes sense, Tracy, if you’re honest with yourself.” When Tracy continued to look at her with bafflement, Caroline rapped her lightly on the forehead with her knuckles a couple of times. “Hello …is there anything in there besides denial and fear? Is there enough room for reality?” She sighed and became serious. “Tracy, are you in love with Jack?”

Tracy was stunned. “What? Of course not! I mean, I’ve only known him for a short time.
